Not for review: Fox's "Mixed Signals"

"Not for review" is an occasional series of pieces in which I offer my thoughts on the pilots for this year's new shows. These are not reviews, as many of the pilots sent to press aren't final versions. Roles can be recast; scenes can be re-edited and many other changes can be made. These are simply my first impressions based on watching early versions of the shows.
The show: Fox's "Mixed Signals"
The premise: Ethan (Kris Marshall), Adam (Nelson Franklin) and Mike (David Denman) are longtime friends living vastly different lives. Ethan is perpetually single. Adam just moved in with his girlfriend. Mike is married with a child and occasionally hides in his car so he can spend a few minutes by himself. Adapted from an Israeli series.
My thoughts:Yes, it's another "friends with different approaches to life" show. But you know what? This one seems to make the formula work. I actually laughed several times during the pilot. The leads have an easy rapport, and, despite the scenes where Mike hides in his car, it doesn't seem to be a show about how being attached is a hopeless drag. Nor is it about how single people are hopelessly lonely. It's just about guys who are trying to find their way in life, and be true to themselves and each other. I would definitely give this another shot.
